BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method)

BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method)

BREEAM is one of the most widely used Environmental assessments for buildings and has certified over 200,000 buildings to date.

BREEAM aims to mitigate the life cycle impacts of buildings on the environment, enable buildings to be recognised according to their environment benefits, provide a credible environmental label for buildings and to stimulate demand for sustainable buildings.  As such high BREEAM assessment grades are being demanded for both new, refurbishment and refit construction projects.

Credits are awarded in the following 10 categories:

BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method)1. Management
2. Health and Wellbeing
3. Energy
4. Transport
5. Water
6. Material
7. Waste
8. Land use and Ecology
9. Pollution
10. Innovation

Credits are added together from each category for an overall score. The grades are: Pass, Good, Very Good, Excellent & Outstanding.

Click here for more informationThe Energy category offers the highest number of credits and is the most heavily weighted. It therefore makes good financial sense to invest primarily on this category before looking at lesser weighted categories, to ensure that you can get the maximum award with the lowest expenditure. The credits are awarded by an independent accredited assessor and then overseen by an independent sustainability board.

Mitsubishi Electric systems have achieved an ‘Outstanding’ BREEAM rating.
